Daily Linocuts

As 2024 winds down, I'm embarking on a daily linocut practice for December —a way to process everything this year has brought (keeping up with the news cycle, yes, but also in my small personal world) . I'm not entirely sure how the imagery will evolve, but I'm excited to see how this daily exercise shapes my work.

This has been an incredibly busy year outside my art practice, so these daily prints are my attempt to slow down and be present before the year slips away. It's the closest I've ever come to maintaining a daily drawing habit. My sketchbook tends to be a chaotic mix of half-finished ideas, to-do lists, and scattered scribbles. I often jump straight to transferring an image onto the lino block before it's fully resolved as a sketch, sometimes freehanding directly on the block itself.

This approach goes against the grain of many printmakers who meticulously plan each block and printed layer in advance. I've realized I work in a somewhat painterly way with this decidedly non-painterly medium. While this spontaneity might be seen as a weakness, the evolution and happy accidents that emerge from the process make things far more interesting to me.

I'm also not typically consistent—or comfortable—sharing work on Instagram, but this project feels manageable. Small enough. Maybe even fun. Follow along here

Things In-Progress:

Kathe Kollwitz, The People, 1923
  • Reading: I’ve been revisiting the works of Kathe Kollwitz and others in German Expressionist Woodcuts by Shane Weller.

  • I made a bunch of shirts over the past few weeks based on linocut designs from this past year including my anhinga print, the astronaut, cosmic pool, and a few with dragonflies, blue jays, and hummingbirds. I have slowly been adding them online and will have them all loaded when the shop reopens next week. Reach out for specific sizes and colors.
